Breast enlargement is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK. It aims to make one or both of your breasts bigger and/or change their shape. Before you make your decision about this kind of surgery, we’ll have a talk about what you’re looking to achieve and what your options might be.
During breast augmentation surgery, I insert an artificial implant made of silicone gel just behind the breast, which will increase its size, make changes to its shape, or correct asymmetry (when one breast is much smaller than the other).
Also known as: Boob job, breast augmentation, augmentation mammoplasty
Breast enlargement can make such a difference to a woman’s confidence, and nobody understands that more than my patients! Have a look at their excellent results and hear from them how their lives have changed post-surgery.
This wonderful lady has had a fantastic Breast Enhancement result with a round implant placed under her normal breast tissue. On her right ‘after’ photo you can see she still has a dressing to her breast which is where her incision was placed. You can see she’s gotten better fullness in the upper pole of the breast and her side on profile shows the projection she’s achieved so well. We are both delighted with her progress and her results so far!
When you have the confidence to get kitted out for the beach after breast enhancement surgery - doesn’t this patient look great! I’m delighted for her. Breast enhancement surgery can be performed to achieve your life time goals. When performed safely and in expert hands, you can expect great results.

There are so many different factors which need to be considered before I can understand if you’ll be suitable for surgery – and a lot of details that you’ll need to know before you can decide if it’s going to be the best option for you.
However, if you’re over 18, in good physical and mental health and would like to have larger, fuller breasts, or if your breasts are quite different in size to each other, you could benefit from breast enlargement surgery. And if you’ve found that pregnancy and breastfeeding have left your breasts looking ‘deflated’, this procedure could also help.
It’s very important that you understand what might be possible to achieve from surgery, so we’ll talk about what your expectations are at your consultation, and I’ll let you know if I believe that it would be achievable.
Having a boob job can bring a range of benefits. A boob job can be a great option if you’re looking to enhance the shape or size of your breasts, because it can help you to feel that your body – and your curves – are more in proportion and balance out your figure.
Improving your breast shape can make your breasts appear rounder and more lifted. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as losing a lot of weight, can reduce the size of your breasts and this kind of surgery could make them look and feel fuller. And an implant in one breast can help to ‘even up’ the breasts if one is noticeably smaller than the other.
Many of the breast enlargement patients I’ve treated have found that having bigger breasts through surgery has been a boost to their self-confidence, and they’ve begun to feel more comfortable in types of clothing that they felt they couldn’t wear before, such as swimwear. Bigger breasts can help improve how clothes fit or ‘sit’ on your body, so you feel more comfortable in a wider range of clothes.
Of course, having any kind of surgery will always bring some potential risk of complications, such as infection and bleeding, and you need to be aware of these risks before you make your final decision about whether a boob job is right for you. Having a general anaesthetic, too, brings risks of its own. I’ll always let you know about the possible downsides of surgery, as well as the benefits it could bring, when we’re discussing your treatment at your consultation.
We’ll discuss these in full, but other risks which are associated with breast enlargement include implant rupture or leakage, capsular contracture (when scar tissue forms around the implant and makes the breast feel hard), changes in breast sensation and changes in shape or symmetry. In some cases, additional surgery might be needed if any issues arise.

Breast augmentation surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic – this means that you’ll be completely asleep while I perform the surgery. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, I’ll make an incision either under or next to your breast and create a pocket either under your chest muscle, or under your breast tissue, and position the implant here. Where exactly the implant will go will depend on the effect that you’d like after surgery, your individual anatomy and the type of implant I’m using – but, again, we’ll have discussed these details at your consultation.
Once that’s completed and the implant is in place, I’ll close the incision. After your surgery, I’ll make sure that you’re well looked after. You’ll stay overnight at the hospital, and you’ll be given medication so that any pain or discomfort can be managed.
I’ll let you know the best ways to look after your wounds and give you tips on how to make sure you look after yourself and your new implants when you leave hospital. It’s normal to feel sore and have some swelling in the days after your surgery, and you’ll need to make sure you get plenty of rest during the first few days.
You should take up to 2 weeks off work, although you might need more if you have a very active job. Don’t drive for at least a week and don’t do any heavy lifting or intense exercise for at least 6 weeks.
And of course, you’ll have a follow-up appointment with me following your operation so that I can check you’re healing well and your results are on the right track.
