Otoplasty

Having ears that you feel are too large for your head, or ears that protrude too far from the side of your head can affect your confidence. I’m dedicated to helping patients feel great about themselves, and so otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery) is one of my most popular procedures.

About The Procedure

Otoplasty is a catch-all term for a number of surgical procedures which address different ear concerns. The shape, size or position of the ears can be changed, and the results can be dramatic. I’ve seen some great results in my patients after their otoplasty procedure has helped to balance out the proportions of their head and face. We can discuss what you’d like to achieve and what could be possible when I see you at your consultation.

My Patients' Results

As you can see from their pictures, my otoplasty patients are thrilled with their results. From subtle differences to significant changes, having ear reshaping surgery has helped them feel more confident.

Pinnaplasty or otoplasty is a ‘setting back of the ear’ procedure, addressing prominence of the ear/s, and can be performed as a day case procedure. This lady has done tremendously well - she’s got a fantastic new ear shape and finally it’s sitting in a much better more streamlined position to match her other ear.

Look at this incredible transformation after otoplasty - doesn't my patient look outstanding? I couldn't be happier for them. Otoplasty can offer a significant confidence boost, helping you reach your lifetime aesthetic goals.

FAQs

An otoplasty procedure could help if you have large ears and would like to reduce their size, or if you have ears which are quite different sizes. If you have ears that you feel stick out too much, I can pin them back so that they lie closer to the sides of your head. Through otoplasty surgery, I can also help with issues such as stretched, torn or enlarged earlobes, as well as noticeable creases in the ears. And if your ears have been misshapen from birth or have changed after an injury, an otoplasty procedure could be the answer.

Just like every kind of surgical procedure, otoplasty does have some risks and side effects which you should be aware of. As a guide, they include infection, bleeding, asymmetry, inflammation and stiff ears. I’ll make sure that you know about any potential risks that are relevant to otoplasty when we go over your procedure details at your consultation.

There are several different types of otoplasty surgery, and what happens in each is different. If you’re having ear reduction surgery, I’ll remove skin and cartilage, either from part of your ear or the whole ear, to reduce its size and reshape it.

If you’re having one or both of your ears pinned back – known as a pinnaplasty – I’ll make an incision at the back of your ear and remove some of the skin from the cartilage. I’ll reshape the cartilage to help the ear sit closer to your head, and then close the incision.

Ear correction can help to improve the appearance of the ear if it’s deformed or oddly shaped, whether that’s due to an injury you’ve experienced (such as cauliflower ear) or you’ve had it from birth.
When we meet at your consultation, and if you’re a good candidate for otoplasty, I’ll be able to let you know exactly what the procedure will involve to help you decide if you’d like to move forward with treatment.

In the first few days after your surgery, your ears will probably feel sore, tender or numb, but you can take over the counter painkillers to help. Depending on the kind of otoplasty I’ve performed, you may be wearing a compression garment over the area or a dressing may have been applied, and these would be in place for the first few days.

Once they’re removed, it’s likely that you’ll be able to start exercising – gently at first – and go back to work, depending on the kind of job you have.

Of course, as part of your treatment plan you’ll have a follow up appointment scheduled with me so that I can check that your progress after your ear surgery is going well.

How long your full recovery will take, and when you’ll see your final results, will depend on different factors such as the rate of your natural healing, how long any inflammation takes to subside and the kind of procedure you’ve had, but usually this is between 6 and 12 weeks.
